Every Pokémon trainer has their favorite monsters and I’ll just say it: Mewtwo is one of mine. This odd, psychic-powered Pokémon who looks a kind of cat-monkey who usually is depicted on-card in space or on some astral plane has been around since the first versions of the Pokémon video game and he’s been a favorite since. Mewtwo is also one of the franchise’s most powerful Pokémon, with even the base version of the monster being extremely effective in the game. Mewtwo was later declared a Legendary Pokémon and this has led to many interactions of this quirky little monster in dozens of Pokémon sets and subsets. With its no-nonsense stare, powerful abilities, and funny little tail, Mewtwo has appeared in tons of versions over the years and remains one of the most popular characters in the franchise.
So, which versions of Mewtwo command the best prices for collectors and investors alike? We’ll explore the best Mewtwo cards around and the ones that are worth the most money. If you’re looking to make a Mewtwo investment or just round out a good collection of this famous monster, we’ve got the goods for you right here in this article from a devoted fan of this legendary Pokémon.
Mewtwo: A Brief History for Card Collectors
Mewtwo is one of the original Pokémon from Nintendo’s first games and it’s often known as the "Genetic Pokémon" because players in the video game find it in a lab from genetic engineering. Mewtwo has remained prominent and popular through the games, movies, and, of course, the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) over the years, where it’s known to be one the strongest Pokémon around. The story is that it was engineered from Pokémon Mew's DNA and possesses psychic abilities that surpass Mew's (thus, “Mewtwo”). In addition to its battle prowess, Mewtwo's appearance and personality have evolved over time, too. Mewtwo’s distinctive and imposing look, standing 6 feet 7 inches tall, with features likened to a cross between a cat, squirrel, and, perhaps, a kangaroo. Despite its fearsome appearance and abilities, Mewtwo has been portrayed as a character torn over its purpose in the world, adding to the appreciation for this interesting Pokémon through good character development. Now, let’s take a look at some of its best cards.
The 15 Best and Most Valuable Mewtwo Pokémon Cards.
15) 2016 Japanese Pokémon XY Promo Holo Full Art 20th Anniversary Battle Festa Mewtwo EX #XY-P - $2,750
Let’s start our list with the most ‘realistic’ depiction of Mewtwo around. The artwork on this card is stunning, especially in the way the lights and shadows add so much texture to it. There is also a powerful sense of movement on the card, almost like the image is in real motion. The holo sheen is just the icing on the cake of one truly compelling card. While these full-art cards can be challenging to read from across the table, they showcase the work of Pokémon artists brilliantly. Being part of the XY series, this card also fits into a broader context of the Pokémon TCG, representing an era where Full Art and EX cards, which were generally more powerful, were popular with players and collectors alike. This version of Mewtwo is also one of the most powerful versions of the monster you’ll find anywhere.

This Mewtwo promo card was produced in 2016 as part of the 20th Anniversary of the Pokémon franchise and the Battle Festa event run in celebration of that milestone. These types of promo cards are almost always popular with investors and collectors due to their limited availability and the unique circumstances surrounding their release. They do not print these special cards in large numbers or repeated events.
The Mewtwo card that set the record price was in PSA 10 Gem Mint condition and sold in June 2023 for $2,750. As you will see on our list, pricing for Pokémon cards in 2023 have been steadily rising over the last few months. Despite the huge surge in prices for most trading cards throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Pokémon cards are still riding high even as most people get back to their normal lives. No one is complaining as all of our collections get more valuable.
14) 1997 Japanese Pokémon Bandai Carddass Vending Full Prism Mewtwo #150 - $2,899
A real blast from the past from the earliest days of the Pokémon franchise, the 1996 Pokémon Bandai Carddass Vending cards are so named because of how this series was made available to Japanese collectors. The Bandai Carddass series was a big set of collectible but non-game Pokémon cards that were distributed through vending machines throughout Japan. The set had lots of monsters and different design elements, including ‘prism’ cards like this one that adds a reflective and iridescent surface to a subset of the cards. This early version of Mewtwo already is in an unusual pose for the monster, with rocks rising up around him, presumably from his psychokinesis. While this rainbow prism version was popular, you’ll see another version just one more step up the list.
Although these Mewtwo cards are not used in the Pokémon TCG, they are part of the history of the franchise, making them popular with collectors and investors alike. The copy of this second Bandai Mewtwo card was a PSA 10 Gem Mint example and it sold in April 2023 for $2,899. With prices continuing to climb like this, we can expect more value for Bandai cards in the future. Those early days continue to fade further back in time, but they still shine brightly in the hearts of Pokémon fans.
13) 1996 Japanese Pokémon Bandai Carddass Vending Prism Mewtwo #150 - $2,999
A real blast from the past from the earliest days of the Pokémon franchise, the 1996 Pokémon Bandai Carddass Vending card is so named because of how it was made available to Japanese collectors. The Bandai Carddass series was a big set of collectible but non-game Pokémon cards that were distributed through vending machines in Japan. The set had lots of monsters and different design elements, including ‘prism’ cards like this one that adds a reflective and iridescent surface to a subset of the cards. This early version of Mewtwo already shows the mysterious and powerful Pokémon with a lot of its signature look and the number most often associated with it, #150.
Although these Mewtwo cards are not used in the Pokémon TCG, they are part of the history of the franchise, making them popular with collectors and investors alike. The prism design has a distinct '90s aesthetic that evokes nostalgia for many collectors and it’s easy to get nostalgic when you look at the design that was so popular with these and other types of trading cards of the day. The copy of the Mewtwo card that set this record price was a PSA 10 Gem Mint example sold in July 2023 for almost $3,000. With prices continuing to climb like this, we can expect more value for Bandai cards in the future. Those early days continue to fade further back in time, but they still shine brightly in the hearts of Pokémon fans.
12) 2004 Pokémon EX Rocket’s Mewtwo EX Holo Team Rocket Returns #99 - $3,250
This Ultra Rare Mewtwo Holo card from the Pokémon EX series, Rocket's Mewtwo, shows one of the more powerful incarnations of Mewtwo. The twist is that it's working for Team Rocket, the notorious team of villain trainers. In general, Team Rocket cards have an edgy appearance and more confrontational-looking Pokémon. The artwork on this Mewtwo card is a good example of that situation as it depicts Mewtwo's menacing power directed at the person holding the card. The card is also part of the EX series of more powerful Pokémon, which is popular with collectors. All of these elements add up to a very valuable and desirable card to add to your collection.
This dazzler of a card hit a record price in June 2023, when a PSA 10 Gem Mint copy sold for about $3,250. Based on other recent sales, this Mewtwo card is definitely trending higher in value, with a massive jump in 2023. We can certainly expect higher-grade copies to continue to soar with the popularity of both Mewtwo and Team Rocket cards helping fuel that demand.
11) 2019 Japanese Pokémon Sun & Moon Promo GX HR Competition Mewtwo #363 - $3,500
This Japanese Mewtwo promo card is from the Sun & Moon (SM) set and it was handed out at tournaments back in 2019. The card features a Legendary version of Mewtwo shown in an almost humanoid form and sporting some of the most exceptional stats you’ll find on this list. The HR (Hyper Rare) classification is a higher level of rarity and the design adds a stunning rainbow foil effect, making it really stand out visually.
This is also a GX card, which are much more powerful than regular cards and have special abilities or attacks that are limited in use because of their incredible game-changing effects. Thus, these Mewtwo cards are sought after for their in-game use in addition to their intrinsic collector value.
The market has been moving a number of these cards recently, all in the same price range of our record price here. This PSA 10 Gem Mint condition card sold for $3,500 in July 2023 and although there are still copies left for sale, the price is on the rise. If you want to add this distinctive card to your collection, be sure to watch the trending prices on Cardbase because they are definitely increasing quickly.
10) 2002 Pokémon Mewtwo 20/165 Expedition Holofoil Rare E-Reader - $3,999
This 2002 Pokémon Mewtwo card looks familiar because this pose is popular for Mewtwo, flying through space with an ominous look on its face. What sets this card apart from most is its compatibility with the Nintendo e-Reader, a device that was used with the Game Boy Advance way back in the early 2000s. Pokémon Trainers could swipe the card on the e-Reader to get additional content such as mini-games and interactive features. Sadly, this technology didn't last long, but it made the cards in the Expedition set unique and highly sought-after for collectors and investors seeking the most valuable cards.
Otherwise, this is a pretty standard version of Mewtwo with stats and abilities you’ll see on other Mewtwo cards. The holofoil design does add a shine and appeal to the card, too. While few people probably still have their eReader around, the card has retained value twenty years later. This record price was set in April 2023 when a PSA 10 Gem Mint copy of this quirky card sold for $3,999. Despite the lack of technology to enjoy the extras, these exclusive Mewtwo cards will still hold value for collectors for years to come.
9) 2002 Pokémon Legendary Collection Box Topper Mewtwo #S4 - $4,000
The 2002 Pokémon Legendary Collection Box Topper Mewtwo card #S4 was included in 2002 Legendary Collection boxes. Box Toppers are special cards that come with sealed booster boxes. They're often not playable in standard games but are highly sought after by collectors. The Legendary Collection Box Toppers are notable for their rarity and the unique artwork they feature. The Legendary Collection set itself is known for its “fireworks” holos, adding to its aesthetic appeal. As a reverse holo, the effect is all over the card, giving it a distinctive appearance that is instantly recognizable.
The record price here was set back in April 2023, another Mewtwo card that has seen a surge in value during 2023. A PSA 10 Gem Mint copy sold for $4,000, and we can expect more copies in similar pristine shape to increase in value over time. Keep reading for a similar card that came out the same year and also showed off Mewtwo on a reverse holo card in a different color.
8) 1999 Pokémon Base Set Holofoil Mewtwo Ken Sugimori Auto #10 - $5,400
Okay, we don’t like to repeat cards on the list unless they are significantly different, but this one is special. That kind of gives away that you’ll see a version of this Base Set card further up the list, but you knew that was coming, right? This particular one-of-a-kind Mewtwo card is so valuable because it is signed by the Mewtwo-meister himself, Ken Sugimori. He’s the artist that brought this iconic version of the Pokémon to life in the first edition of the Pokémon TCG and he was part of the monster’s original design team. While our favorite psychic monster has seen a lot of versions over the years and through dozens of sets, Sugimori set the standard for this unique-looking Pokémon.
The card itself is a copy of the original Base Set Mewtwo, without a 1st Edition logo, so it’s just a pretty common card from the time. With a PSA 5 EX grading, and even a lackluster Autograph rating of 8, this collectible is still irresistible because of Sugimori’s large black signature in both Japanese and English. He even added a quick drawing of Pikachu on the bottom for a bit of fun. How could you not want this card?
Someone certainly did, because it sold back in June 2023 for a whopping $5,400. That’s obviously an exceptional expensive price for a card rated in such poor condition, yet how can you put a price on the signature and mini-artwork of Ken Sugimori right on the card? I can only imagine this is one of the key gems in the buyer’s collection.
7) 2001 Japanese Pokémon Neo 4 Shining Mewtwo #150
Another exceptional-looking Mewtwo card from the turn of the millennium, this Shining Mewtwo from the Neo 4 set (Neo Destiny in the US) has an exceptional design and powerful abilities, making this rare card highly desirable to collectors and investors alike. The artwork is stellar, with a stony-looking Mewtwo that is almost like something out of Egyptian myth. The depth of color and background design makes for a dramatic look. Mewtwo’s never looked much better, although the color scheme is a bit lighter on the US release version.
As with so many cards on the list, this Mewtwo card’s record price benefits from a recent surge in prices for the best cards featuring this fan-favorite Pokémon. A PSA 10 Gem Mint copy of the card sold in April 2023 for $5,750. Again, this just shows the trend on increased value is alive and investing in this Mewtwo card could be lucrative.
6) 2006 Pokémon Gold Star EX Holon Phantoms Holo Mewtwo #103 - $6,499
This 2006 Mewtwo card is from the Holon Phantoms set, which itself was part of the EX series. Gold Star cards are named for the gold star symbol that appears next to the Pokémon's name at the top of the card. This added a kind of additional level of rarity and limited players to a single Gold Star Pokémon in their deck. These powerful cards were also distinctive for their unique artwork showing off traditional Pokémon in different forms, with some awesome powers and alternative color. Mewtwo itself is shown in a striking holofoil design, looking very commanding with its usual spacey background. It’s a fantastic piece of art that breaks out of frame for dramatic effect. Certainly, it has the stats to match the powerful look of this iteration of Mewtwo.
Any fan of Mewtwo will want this card, but keep in mind that its value has been on the rise. This record price was just achieved in August 2023, with a PSA 10 Gem Mint copy selling for $6,499, which is up significantly from sales just a month or two before. The value is spiking, so start tracking the price on Cardbase if you want to get a copy before it gets too expensive.
5) 2000 Danone Pokémon Stadium Tip-Shiny Gold Mewtwo #8 (#150) - $7,329
Back in the 2000, Canadian Pokémon fans got a chance to collect all of the 48 Pokémon cards that came with their yogurt. Danone made snack time a wild adventure by tucking Pokémon Stadium Tip Cards into packages of their Danone Go yogurt products to promote the release of that game. The cards were promos that were not used in the Pokémon TCG, but this version of Mewtwo (is that Dark or Shadow Mewtwo reaching out at you?) looks great on that deep space background, so we’re including it in the list. Plus, it’s definitely become a hot collector’s item worth a lot of money.
The front of these promo cards featured new artwork of many of our favorite Pokémon characters, including Mewtwo, who is represented here as part of the subset of ‘Shiny’ cards. The back of the cards provided stats and vulnerabilities for the monsters in both English and French, since these cards were distributed in Canada, eh!
The version of the card that sold for this record price was a PSA 10 Gem Mint copy and it was purchased in May 2023 for about $7,329. While you can still find ungraded copies for much less, if you get one in great shape, this is an ideal card to grade to increase its value.
4) 2002 Reverse Holo Legendary Collection Mewtwo #29 - $7,500
Another gorgeous reverse holo card that is better to enjoy in your collection than to try to play with, this 2002 Legendary Collection version of Mewtwo shows our favorite psychic Pokémon on the attack with psychic waves emanating from its tail. The rest of the card is a reverse holo, with a ‘fireworks’ style that was a signature of the Legendary Collection, making the text challenging to read, but lovely to behold. You’ll notice it shares the main art from the Box Topper Legendary card we previously reviewed further up the list. The color scheme of the reverse holo portions of the card are quite different, though.
While the card is over twenty years old now, this was a time of new ideas for how the Pokémon Company was going to print interesting variants and options, so this collection brought some new life to the cards at the time. Reverse holo cards were brand new then, having only been introduced the previous year. Couple this historical value and the popularity of Mewtwo and you can see how the price of this card could escalate into the price range we’ve seen it hit.
Back in November 2022, a PSA 10 Gem Mint copy of the card sold for $7,500. Since then, we’ve seen prices fluctuate, so that premium pricing might be a remnant of the heady days of the pandemic when prices were surging all over the online marketplaces. We’ll see if this version of Mewtwo can maintain that lofty price over time as others are right now.
3) 1996 No Rarity Symbol Japanese Pokémon Holographic Mewtwo #150 - $15,750
As usual, we love misprints in the collector market. Early print runs are notorious for missing some aspect of a card that would later become so common that no one would ever miss it. Yet, this first Japanese version of Mewtwo is missing its Rarity symbol. The printers caught it before the whole print run was out, however, which makes this delightful little misprint even more valuable. Of course, as obvious as it seems now, it took a while for collectors to notice the difference and now the prices are increasing for these misprints.
The record price for this Mewtwo card was paid for a PSA 10 Gem Mint copy, which sold in March 2021 for $15,750. While lower-grade copies have sold for much less money more recently, it’s clear this is a card on the rise in terms of the amount of money people will pay for this obscure misprint when it is in pristine shape. The hardcore collectors who need all of their cards in perfect condition will be willing to pay a premium to keep their collection pure.
2) 2021 25th Anniversary Japanese Pokémon Creatures Deck Corporate Mewtwo EX #28 - $20,000
Once again, Mewtwo scores a recent price surge on a desirable and exclusive card. This recent collectible from the 2021 Pokémon Creatures Deck is a whirligig of a Japanese card bustling with a visually kinetic feel. While the card is in Japanese, we do get the English expression “Psychic Infinity” prominently placed on the card that shows Mewtwo with a modern and 3D-style look, bustling out of the frame and almost breaking the fourth wall. This is a more cartoony Mewtwo than we sometimes see, but it’s used to excellent effect. This one really pushes the limit of the design of the cards still remaining functional to play the game. It’s exciting to see newer designs that can still be thrilling after so many years and thousands of Pokémon cards.
As noted, this Mewtwo card sold recently for a significant premium on top of what the card has sold for in the past. This record-breaking card sold in June 2023 for approximately $20,000 in CGC 10 Pristine condition. Being a limited edition card, we can expect it to appreciate in value even more in the future.
1) 1999 Pokémon Mewtwo Base Set 1st Edition #10 - $35,000
The fact that the original Mewtwo from the 1st Edition of the Pokémon TCG tops our list just seems right. This classic version of the psychic-type Pokémon was the first one players got to see and every other Mewtwo TCG card since has taken its inspiration from this original incarnation. Yes, it’s ‘Shadowless’ but also 1st Edition, which is explained thoroughly here. While the flavor text describes Mewtwo as the product of a scientist’s experimentation, most players just love this powerful and effective monster for its balance of power and speed. The original artwork shows a confident Mewtwo ready for battle with his mental powers on a field of blue energy. Sometimes a simple look is all you need to make an impact.
As with all of the original set, the nostalgia is strong with this card. This record-breaking price was set on a PSA 10 Gem Mint copy of the card that was sold in July 2023 for about $35,000. This recent spike in the amount paid marks a significant increase from recent sales that were in the $16,000 to $20,000 range, suggesting that this card is getting more and more valuable even after the pandemic-era surge in prices.
If you have a copy in similar graded condition, keep an eye on the main card’s page on Cardbase if you want to see how the trend continues. Or, if you’re in the market to add an OG 1st Edition Mewtwo to your collection, place it on your Watchlist in hopes of a Hot Deal coming up before this card gets priced out of your budget.
